Grilled Mango

Mangoes – le sigh! That is all that can be said about amazing mangoes! All you need on a page after the word mango is 1,000 heart-eyed emojis. I love mangoes in nearly any form but grilled mango is just amazing.

Inevitably as mango season hits you start the race of, “Just how many can I consume?!” Which in itself is an easy task. What’s not easy is how to present it well at a dinner party. Fresh cut fruit isn’t always seen as fancy enough or a dessert – so you could do custard, fruit cream, kulfi, or cake – but nothing is as visually appealing and just different enough to be fancy as grilled mango with a ginger ice cream. Or even a frozen custard.

Grilling the mangoes makes the natural sugars come out more as the heat caramelizes them. Top it with a little cinnamon or cardamom and you have yourself an amazing treat. I love fruit and current man friend doesn’t. Well he does, but only if you feed it to him. They’re all children aren’t they? So inevitably, I’m always looking for ways to make fruit seem more interesting. And I gotta tell ya – grilling seems to do it. Mangoes and pineapples. I throw both at him, he feels extra manly for having grilled them. I’m happy because I didn’t have to do squat for this amazingness. And we have a healthy treat.

This is an amazingly easy dish. You can use an indoor grill, or even broil them if a grill isn’t handy.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe mangoes

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • Cinnamon (Optional)

  • 1 tbsp cardamon, ground

  • 2 tbsp pistachio, chopped finely

Directions

  • Slice mangoes off of the pit. Careful to not cut yourself or the pit. They’re a tough little fruit to navigate if you’re not careful.
  • Lightly sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon (if you’re using it).
  • Prepare the grill or griddle.
  • Cut side down, on rack set 6 inches over glowing coals until golden brown, about 2 minutes.
  • When end pieces of mango are cool enough to handle, push from skin side to turn inside out.
  • Grill remaining mango slices about 2 minutes on each side.
  • If you’d rather serve them in their skin, cover grill and grill mangoes for 2-4 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Garnish with ground cardamom and pistachio or with ice cream and mint as I did.
